What Is Dit Da Jow? The Ancient Chinese Liniment People Have Sworn By for Centuries
Long before ice packs and foam rollers, martial artists in China had a different answer to the pains, bruises, and strained muscles that come with their training: a dark-colored, herbal-infused liniment called dit da jow.
The name translates roughly to "fall and hit wine" — dit da referring to the falls and strikes of combat and training, jow to the wine or spirit the herbs are steeped in. It's a remedy built with one purpose in mind: helping the body recover from physical trauma. Centuries later, it's still doing exactly that! Fortunately, it's no longer exclusively for martial artists. Now it's widely used by athletes and people who often perform manual labor, as well as for everyday bruises and mishaps.
Where Dit Da Jow Comes From
Chinese herbal medicine stretches back thousands of years, and the branch dedicated to treating injuries (known as dit da) evolved alongside the martial arts and artists themselves. Training meant getting hurt, and getting hurt meant knowing how to heal.
The most famous formulas trace to the Buddhist monasteries of ancient China. Most legendarily among them is the Shaolin temple, where monks refined recipes combining dozens of medicinal herbs to speed recovery from training injuries. These formulas were treated as a treasure. They were passed down from master to trusted disciple, guarded within family and school lineages, and adjusted over generations. Traditional Chinese medicine relies on a balance of cooling and warming the body in order to create harmony. Warming herbs are used to move circulation, cooling herbs to calm swelling, and blood-moving herbs to clear the deep bruising known as blood stasis.
That lineage tradition is alive in every bottle we make. Our 7 Dragons formula was created in 1990 by Dr. Edgar Chase, an acupuncturist and herbalist who built on the traditional dit da jow base to create something unique. 7 Dragons continues this tradition, crafting our formula in small batches, with gratitude to those who came before. You can read more of that origin story on our homepage.
What Dit Da Jow Is Used For
Traditionally, dit da jow is applied externally to support the body's recovery from the everyday consequences of an active life:
- Muscle and joint aches: from training, workouts, or repetitive strain
- Bruises: the classic, original use
- Sprains and strains: the "falls and hits" the name refers to
- Post-workout recovery: many athletes apply it after intense sessions
- Insect bites, stings, and itching: a practical, diverse use discovered along the way
Modern research has begun catching up with what practitioners have observed for centuries. A 2023 systematic review in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders examined clinical studies of topical Chinese herbal medicines for chronic musculoskeletal pain across the knees, shoulders, neck, and lower back. A review in the journal Pharmaceuticals looked specifically at traditional Chinese medicine for topical treatment of skeletal muscle injury. And a randomized controlled trial published in 2025 studied topical TCM used alongside standard care for upper-extremity injuries. The research conversation is ongoing, but it's a conversation Western science is now having seriously.
How to Use Dit Da Jow Properly
One of the reasons dit da jow has endured is that using it is simple. Ours comes as an easy-to-apply spray, and the method takes seconds:
- Spray directly onto the affected muscle, joint, or area.
- Let it dry. No rubbing needed — the liniment absorbs on its own as it air-dries. Blot any drips with a cloth or tissue.
- Use as needed — after activity, or when soreness shows up. Twice daily is the recommended rhythm.
A few common-sense guidelines: dit da jow is for external use only. Keep it away from your face, eyes, and broken skin. Don't use it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, and consult your doctor with any questions about use.
